Criminal checks chaos

12.00.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 10th Jul 2008

The revelation that Criminal Records Bureau checks have resulted in 700 innocent people being branded as criminals is "appalling" according to Graham Oakes, Lib Dem PPC for Exeter .

"The care industry has struggled with this inefficient system now for several years, a system that denies the right to work to people sometimes 6 weeks, a system that could give Care Home managers a result within hours is now found to be unsound."

"If we can not trust the CRB to give us an accurate result then what are employers in the care industry supposed to do?"

"The whole system was badly set up, has increased costs to care workers and companies and is now found to be unsafe."

"This is a disgrace and heads should roll."
