Build Homes For People

8.00.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Mon 15th Sep 2008

Speaking at the Liberal Democrat Conference in Bournemouth today Graham Oakes, Lib Dem PPC for Exeter called for the building of "sustainable communities designed for people".

"Housing is a major problem in the South West, particularly for young people but we must build new homes - not new ghettoes"

He stated that a "one size fits all policy can not be applied to meeting the housing need across Britain"

"We need to build homes for people. Homes that, by design, reduce crime, improve the health, both mental and physical, of the people who live there, whilst protecting the health of our planet. By infilling all the gaps, building on the open spaces, even on our

playing fields we are not creating communities or even building homes - just places for people to sleep in."
