Nick Clegg

Lib Dem Candidate "in awe of Carers"

Graham Oakes, Lib Dem PPC for Exeter described himself as being "in awe of Carers" whilst attending a Carers Day event in Exeter arranged by St Johns Ambulance.

The event included a range of speakers covering subjects from the Magic Carpet - an Arts Project in Exeter & East Devon and information from the Department of Work & Pensions on Carers Benefit.

"This was a terrific event and clearly the Carers who attended really enjoyed it. It was both entertaining and informative. IO met some wonderful people."

"At one point those present were asked how many received Carer's Benefit and only about 3 of the 60 carers present raised their hands. It was clear that most Carers who look after elderly partners or parents do not qualify for the benefit as they are over 65 - what a ridiculous situation. The range benefits themselves were very complex and in desperate need of simplifying. As a society we owe these people, mostly women, a massive debt of gratitude and we should be help them."

"I was also impressed by the younger Carers I met who look after their children with disabilities. As a parent I sometimes feel challenged by my two small children, how these women cope is an inspiration."

"If Gordon Brown is serious about supporting Carers he needs to provide support and benefits for them and he needs to provide enough cash for the County Council to provide more home care and respite places in Care Homes."
