Duryard & St James Councillors Back Ambitious New Circus Arts Hub for Sidwell Street

Duryard & St James councillors Tammy Palmer and Kevin Mitchell have announced their support for an exciting new proposal to transform Sidwell Street Methodist Church into a landmark circus arts hub for Exeter and the wider South West.

The plans, developed by Paulos Circus in close consultation with the Methodist Church and existing community groups, outline a vibrant new future for the historic building. The proposed hub would include a circus school, museum, and performance venue, while continuing to honour the church’s heritage and maintain its role as a place of worship and community activity.

The proposed development seeks to honour Exeter’s rich history of circuses and entertainment, and the Councillors believe the project represents a significant opportunity for Sidwell Street, bringing fresh investment, increased footfall, and renewed cultural energy to the area.

Cllr Kevin Mitchell said: “This is an outstanding opportunity for Sidwell Street and the surrounding area. To have an exciting venue like this will add to the character of St James and the City Centre.”

Cllr Tammy Palmer added: “This is exactly the right place for a new cultural hub for Exeter and we would encourage residents to add their support through the planning application.”

Cllr Michael Mitchell, who sits on the planning committee, remains neutral on planning applications in accordance with committee requirements.
