Exeter Liberal Democrats address growing concerns around potential job cuts at two of Exeter’s largest employers

This evening, Liberal Democrat councillors brought forward a motion responding to growing concerns from residents about proposed redundancy programmes at two of Exeter’s largest employers: the Royal Devon University NHS Foundation Trust and the University of Exeter. Both institutions play a vital role in the life of the city — as major employers, as providers of essential services, and as centres of excellence in healthcare and higher education.

The motion called for clear and constructive dialogue with both organisations regarding the proposed departmental cuts and the potential impact on the services they provide to the wider community. It also requested that both the Trust and the University undertake meaningful consultation processes, ensuring that the voices of key stakeholders — including students, staff, and health service partners — are properly heard.

We are pleased that the motion passed with overwhelming cross party support.

Cllr Michael Mitchell, who proposed the motion, stated:

“This motion was about ensuring that Exeter residents, staff and students are properly supported during a period of uncertainty. I’m pleased that councillors recognised the importance of constructive dialogue with both institutions so that any changes are handled transparently and with the community’s interests at heart.”

Cllr Tammy Palmer who seconded the motion said:

“These proposed changes will affect livelihoods, services and the wider community. By passing this motion, the Council has sent a clear message that we expect meaningful consultation and open communication from both organisations. Our priority is to stand with residents and ensure their concerns are listened to.”

The Exeter Liberal Democrat Council Group has already initiated discussions with senior leaders at the University and will continue to work closely with residents and other key stakeholders to ensure their views are listened to in the coming weeks.
